A man has appeared in court for the first time today charged with murdering Greenhithe schoolgirl Claire Tiltman 21 years ago.

Colin Ash-Smith, from Swanscombe, did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody.

The 45-year-old is next due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday morning.

He appeared before magistrates in Maidstone via video link this morning. Wearing a white t-shirt and black trousers, he spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

The public gallery was packed with friends of Claire and Ash Smith's father, Aubrey.
Ash-Smith is being prosecuted after lawyers were handed a file by Kent Police following a cold case review.

Tilt, as she was known to her friends, was stabbed more than 40 times in January 1993 in an alleyway off London Road, Greenhithe.

It was just four days after her 16th birthday and not far from her home in Woodward Terrace.

Her mother, Linda, died in 2008 and her father, Cliff, in September 2012 without seeing justice.

Claire, an only child, had been on her way to visit a friend when she was attacked between 6pm and 6.30pm.

Claire, a Dartford Grammar School pupil, had hoped to join the fire brigade and regularly visited her local fire station while completing her Duke of Edinburgh Award.

SPECIAL BULLETIN: Claire Tiltman Charity Tribute

Gareth Johnson MP

Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford

SPECIAL BULLETIN:

Claire Tiltman Charity Tribute

This Special Bulletin is to publicise the Claire Tiltman Charity Tribute which is being organised by the friends of Claire Tiltman.

The Justice for Claire group, which is made up of Claire Tiltman's friends, have organised a special fundraising event on 18th January 2014 to mark the 21st anniversary of her death.  The Claire Tiltman Charity Tribute evening will feature a live performance from Abba Gold and will be a celebration of Claire's life.  In addition, it will raise funds for two charities that her friends believe would have been dear to her heart.

This event will take place at Princes Park, Dartford Football Club's ground and will raise money in Claire Tiltman's name for the Ellenor Lions Hospice where Claire's mother Linda was cared for before dying in 2008, as well as The Firefighters Charity.  Claire Tiltman wanted to be a firefighter and this charity provides much needed care for past and present service men and women.

I would like to pay tribute to Claire's friends for keeping her unsolved murder in the public eye with the aim of bringing her killer to justice.  This event is a great way to do just that, at the same time as raising money for two very worthwhile charities.

If you would like to attend, tickets are £15 and can be purchased at www.justiceforclaire.co.uk.

Alternatively, donations can also be made to the two charities or support can be given by purchasing a Justice for Claire wristband for just £2.  All the details are available at www.justiceforclaire.co.uk.

SPECIAL BULLETIN: Claire Tiltman Investigation

Gareth Johnson

MP for Dartford

SPECIAL BULLETIN:

This Special Bulletin is to update you on some important developments today:
Claire Tiltman Investigation
You may have seen reports in the news that Kent Police have searched an address of a property near Dartford in relation to their on-going investigation into the murder of Claire Tiltman. Claire was murdered in 1993 in Greenhithe and her killer has never been brought to justice. You may recall that in January the friends of Claire Tiltman organised a walk to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death and in March this year I met with the Home Secretary, the Chief Constable and the officer leading the investigation into her murder. With the news today that an address near Dartford has been searched, it is clear that the effort to secure justice for Claire continues. I am reassured that Kent Police are working diligently, leaving no stone unturned to bring Claire's killer to justice. This is very much an active investigation and this development should be welcomed.
Changes to the Dartford Crossing Local Resident Discount Scheme
The Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, announced today, that in response to a campaign from myself and the MP for Thurrock, an extension to the existing local residents' scheme will come into force from March 2014. A copy of the letter from the Department for Transport can be found at the bottom of this bulletin. The existing residents' scheme allows Dartford residents to pay £10 for 50 free crossing trips and then an additional fee of 20p for further trips. It has been announced today that from March 2014 Dartford residents will have the option of paying a £20 fee to give them unlimited trips over the crossing. This scheme will also be extended to all local owners of privately registered vans. I very much welcome the announcement today regarding these changes to the residents' scheme. It will help both local residents and local businesses who, for the first time, will receive a discount on using the crossing. I still maintain that the tolls should be removed in their entirety but this change will significantly help. Since becoming MP for Dartford I have continually lobbied the Department for Transport over the Dartford Crossing. As of Autumn 2014 the existing toll booths will be replaced with a free-flow system, meaning that the congestion and pollution caused by the booths will be removed. In the debate today, I also raised the subject of the serious police incident last Friday which caused hours of delays following the closure of the crossing and I told the Minister that "the residents of Dartford are sick to the back teeth with the problems emanating from the Dartford Crossing". The response from the Roads Minister was that an in-depth report into this incident would be prepared with a view to mitigating the risk of such problems in the future.

Greenhithe News: Candlelit vigil planned for Claire Tiltman

Claire Tiltman murder in Greenhithe: Candlelit vigil planned to mark 20 years

By Alan Woods                                                                       8:02am Friday 4th January 2013 in News

A CANDLELIT vigil is planned to mark 20 years since Claire Tiltman was murdered just four days after her 16th birthday in Greenhithe.
Claire Tiltman

Claire had been on her way to visit a friend when she was attacked between 6pm and 6:30pm on January 18, 1993, in an alleyway near the A226 London Road.

On January 18 this year, a candlelit walk will be held in Greenhithe to re-trace Claire’s final steps and raise awareness her murder remains unsolved.

The walk, which will begin opposite The Bull Pub in London Road at 6pm, plans to travel to the site where Claire died and leave tributes.

All are welcome to attend, whether or not you knew Claire, and everyone is encouraged to bring a torch or candle.

At 7pm, a memorial service will be held at St Mary’s Church.
Claire’s mother Linda and her father Cliff never gave up hope their daughter’s killer would one day be brought to justice.

Linda died from cancer in 2008 and Cliff died in September last year, just months before the 20th anniversary of his daughter’s death.

Speaking from his bed in a nursing home in January last year, Mr Tiltman said: “It would mean everything to me to find out, after all these years, who did this to Claire.

“It has been a long time, but I've never given up hope and never will.  “I can't begin to put into words how this has affected our family. “Claire has gone and her mum has gone - there is now only me.”
The retired plumber added: “I try to stay strong but will still hide and cry my eyes out for an hour.”
