The good news is that Greenhithe Marina (Management) are not quitting on their vision to provide a first class marina development for the Greenhithe community.

The best news is that they want your views on their latest proposal which will include:

  • Up to 200 walk-on pontoon berths with deepwater fueling facilities and waste collection by river only
  • Dedicated Marina Parking for around 120 -150 cars

And .....

Provided there is local interest and up-take the developers would also like to include.

  • A new nautical training centre where local people and visitors can learn how to sail
  • Local history museum, this could be anything from pictures and artefacts displayed on the clubhouse walls to a small feature and display area
  • River bus service connection to London Bridge with facilities for people using the river taxi service

  1. Do you know how long the River Bus Service would take to reach London Bridge?

Also, it would be good to know where exactly the new Riverside Boardwalk and Fisherman's Wharf would be located?

    1. The River Taxi Service would take about 40 minutes to reach London Bridge by Thames Clipper.

The proposed Boardwalk would form part of the access brow to the marina. In terms of its placement I’m not certain that’s been decided yet. From our recent discussions and meeting with the developers on Thursday of last week, we gather they are in discussion with planners etc. but from the information we saw the developers seem to be considering a number of appropriate locations where this could be developed.

As with the River Taxi service Fisherman’s wharf is something that a lot of local residents appear to be interested in however they are currently not part of the developers proposed plans but could be added if local residents want and support it, hence why the residents association is balloting its members and the wider community.

Subject: New Proposals for Greenhithe Marina

    To whom it may concern:-

Thank you for persevering with this proposal. I have been checking in on a constant basis to hope that this idea will be revived.

The plans should include a river bus so that there is an alternative solution to the car for Greenhithe residents; I have seen that it is suggested that it may take 40 mins for it to arrive in London but for it to replace the train and take people from here to Greenwich etc is a positive boon. I have always thought that this river of ours is underused in this respect. (My brother-in-law has recently revived and is running the ferry option in the River Crouch, so it is in the family!)

The river cadets must also be given the option to carry on their sailing experiences as they already do now.

The car park - where is that to be? All the arguments with the locals in the past - why is it that there is now a car park?

I am not too sure about a history museum - if there is to be a bar/restaurant why not include the information in the lobby area of the restaurant and commentary/objects/relics to be staged around the bar/restaurant. (I have just noted that this is another option instead of a dedicated museum).

Local fishing would be great. Wherever we are in the world we always find the nearest marina and take a fishing trip so I think to have a dedicated area for anglers will be a positive thing.

A discount of any description - to locals and to families/students is also a must as it will be inclusive to those that may need persuading as to the merits of the concept.

Let us hope it is not another ten years before the planners pass the plan.

    Yours,
    Maggie Osborn

    1. Actually Maggie we are not responsible for this project but like you, we are pleased the Developers are persevering with this proposal.

The River Bus idea seems to be very popular and is gaining widespread support amongst GMRA Members and Greenhithe residents.

The residents association certainly supports the idea of ensuring the river cadets / sea scouts are allowed to carry on their sailing activities on the River Thames.

The car parking issue is a curious one but, as a solution, it puts an end to or at least a serious dent in, as you say all the arguments with the locals.

A number of responses suggest that people would enjoy seeing photos and images of Greenhithe spread around the clubhouse but, like you, are less keen on an actually having or visiting Nautical museum

Fishing is also proving to be popular. GMRA will be shortly asking residents for suggestions on where they wold like to fish from, maybe off a pontoon on the marina or if not, could it be provided elsewhere nearby. For example the old concrete barge which a lot of local seem to think would make a great fishing pier, perhaps the developer could fix it up for community use as a number of our members have suggested.

We agree that locals should receive discounted membership and from our discussions with the developers we think it fair to say they are supportive of this approach.
